Although this blog is normally written in Spanish, this time, I chose to write this column in English to honor the language this novel was originally written in.
Please bare with me on this one
When I bought this book I had no idea how good of a decision I had just made in the way I purchased it and what I acquired .
The way I bought it was through the Amazon platform, and what I bought was a phenomenal novel.
The Kindle app works flawlessly on any device you have an Amazon account. They sync and download new purchases automatically. I am seriously thinking of making any new ebook purchases only on Kindle, replacing my iBooks app. One very useful feature I discovered is the percentage indicating how much you have read in a book. Honestly, to know you are in 95% makes you bite your nails with expectations on the finale.
OK, now to what I bought:
The Survivor’s Game is a very interesting novel. To my understanding, the first novel written by its author: Amber Moorman; meaning that we can expect more amazing novels from her. I feel obligated to tell that Amber Moorman is the wife of one of my favorite NFL players: Brian Moorman, the punter for the Buffalo Bills.
The story succeeds in explaining the different points of view of all the characters involved. When the lives of the main characters suddenly intercept, you get the sensation that it was inevitable. The novel had some violent parts and in great detail. You could feel as if they were being inflicted upon you, or your loved ones. That is something not easy to achieve.
Another unique feature was that at the beginning of the story, as the characters were being introduced, it was hard to predict each individual characters' relevance to the story in the future. Let’s say the book starts near the end of the story and then it takes you back to the events that led to where you stand to later walk with the rest of the characters to the conclusion of the book.
This way of telling a story has been done before, what was different this time is that it made me change my mind on how important some of the characters were. I disregarded some of them, to later realize they were the most important part of the book, and vice versa.
I’m positive I misunderstood some parts of the book. Sometimes even though I was not completely sure of what had just been described, I would force myself to continue reading and figure out the missing pieces later in the book as the story developed. Kind of when you walk into a movie that has already started. Like I said, I don’t normally read books that are not written in Spanish and every time I read one, for the first 50 or 60 pages, my mind is not “set to English”so I keep translating what I'm reading in my mind (and we all know the “lost in translation” saying). It is not until my mind's “default” setting is changed that I’m able to understand completely and enjoy, as much as I can, the story.
Greetings!
